The incident occurred just after 11.10pm on Saturday 29 August, in Park Hill.
Officers were called to reports of a single-vehicle collision involving a silver BMW 325, which left the road and collided with a tree opposite the recreation ground.
Ambulance crews and a Suffolk Accident Rescue Service (SARS) doctor were also in attendance. The male driver was subsequently taken to Ipswich Hospital having sustained potentially life-changing injuries.
Any witnesses to the collision, or anyone who may passed a silver BMW in the area just prior to it and who has a dash cam fitted in their vehicle, is asked to contact the Roads and Armed Policing Team on 101, quoting reference CAD 396 of 29 August.
