sa 3 Jul 2021 | If there had been no pandemic this weekend would have been the 14th Maverick Festival (thanks for the reminder Skirky). Maverick has been moved to the start of September this year with favourites Rich Hall, Hank Wangford and BJ Cole and as always there will be new acts to us we'll discover we enjoy. ♫ |
sa 8 May 2021 | 5pm tonight on Alde and Blyth Valley Community Radio (rolls off the tongue eh?) the Maverick Festival's daddy Paul Spencer plays music for rangers, wranglers and rustlers live from the plains and prairies of Suffolk. |
th 18 Mar 2021 | Like the Maverick Festival strap line Often unheard, always unherd. This September the wonderfully grumpy Rich Hall will be returning, and unheard by us but certainly unherd Black Eyed Dogs will do a show and then transmogrify into Dogs Play Dead to do a Grateful Dead set ... can't wait. |
we 24 Feb 2021 | We've always enjoyed at Maverick Festival shows the broad repertoire and sometimes standyup drummer of Norwich band Vagaband who musicalise (yes, we just made that word up) the 2021 Census tv ad. The band briefly appears around 49secs in. ♫ |
su 24 Jan 2021 | We were looking forward to Pancake Day and the return of the Maverick Festival in Easton. Perversely Maverick have made their return more likely by pushing themselves back from July to September. |
th 7 Jan 2021 | Things to look forward to are Pancake Day next month, the race to the sun Paris-Nice happening in March and hopefully local old friend the Maverick Festival returning in July (with Terra Lightfoot) especially as there's been a parliamentary festival inquiry. |
sa 5 Dec 2020 | Maverick Festival favourites Police Dog Hogan are giving the proceeds to Crisis at Christmas ... they've raised £6,774 so far. ♫ |
su 9 Aug 2020 | Saddening but not surprisingly the Red Rooster Festival near Thetford has been postponed until next year. Robert Stan Stamper (seen here on the Ipswich Cardinals chain crew entertaining the visiting Bury Saints sideline) at last year's Maverick Festival before dashing off to dance with his daughter told us the 2018 Roosterfest had been brilliant. ♫ |
su 28 Jun 2020 | Next Saturday 4 July is US Independence Day but more importantly your local pub should re-open. Let's hope bottled beer hasn't reprogrammed your taste buds and you have to relearn draught. In the afternoon you could use up those bottles while Maverick virtually festival on that there Facepack. We'll be looking out for rocker Terra Lightfoot and local Honey and the Bear. ♫ |
tu 5 May 2020 | Tragedy, this year's Maverick Festival in Easton (the thirteenth) not surprisingly has been cancelled. ♫ |
th 9 Apr 2020 | Yesterday 302 confirmed C-19 cases in Suffolk, 39 the biggest step increase so far. Here's the seventeenth reason to be cheerful ... a magic moment hearing this floating out from the Barn Stage at the 2013 Maverick Festival ... she was wearing the same dress. ♫ |
fr 10 Jan 2020 | ♫ The thirteenth lucky for all Maverick Festival this summer in Easton has a firming up programme with some excellent names including the Legendary Shack Shakers, California Feetwarmers and Henhouse Prowlers. Also appearing is guitar abuser Terra Lightfoot whom we saw at Maverick's 2017 Thanksgiving ... she took no prisoners. |
mo 30 Dec 2019 | Coming off stage at the 2013 Maverick Festival one time local resident (we think Farnham) Neil Innes had two little girls rush up, put their arms round him That was great granddad ... sleep well sweet idiot. ♫ |
we 12 Aug 2019 | We've added comedian Rich Hall at the Maverick Festival to peeps in Suffolk. |
we 10 Jul 2019 | ♫ We were impressed Sunday morning how busy Maverick was, the festival's first ever serious rain the preceding day had not prompted significant if any early leavers. This year the unprogrammed Medicine Show stage moved away from The Barn and so could run continually. We much enjoyed the Medicine Show's relaxed style but it would be nice to have a now on stage board. In The Barn we caught the last couple of Kenny Roby's songs and liked his witty laconic style, already looking forward to next year ... |
sa 6 Jul 2019 | ♫ At the Maverick Festival last night we particularly enjoyed James Starks' fluid mandolin and The Lowly Strung's driving show (it prompted Stopwatch Stan to dance). Other treats included the boxy damped sound of Dana Immanuel's banjo. Gosh there's been some development at the venue Easton Farm Park, the corrugated iron barn on the right as you enter has gone and there's a brand new building including showers plus three lodge type buildings in the field. As always Maverick is a joy and really looking forward to today. |
tu 2 Jul 2019 | In Easton the Maverick Festival is always a joy even when the weather isn't perfect. Regrettably there's had to be a change to the bill this weekend but we'll be looking forward to seeing Don Gallardo plus the Henry Brothers and peeps new to us we don't know we like yet. ♫ |
th 27 Jun 2019 | For next month's 12th annual Maverick Festival in Easton there's a free bus service from Wickham Market railway station. ♫ |
we 28 Nov 2018 | ♫ Friday night at Easton Farm Park the Maverick Thanksgiving Party had sufficient eating and drinking that the Earl Soham Vic ran out about three quarters through the evening. We much enjoyed the Henry Brothers country arrangement of I Can't Stand Mondays, perhaps Cher's Bang Bang next? The excellent Don Gallardo closed his The Last Waltz anniversary set with I Shall Be Released and we joined in with the audience singing along on the chorus ... as rewarding as Six Foot From His Tail!. |
su 8 Jul 2018 | ♫ Magnificent weather for another brilliant Maverick producing some wonderful hats and for us the newbs on the Medicine Show stage perhaps the most rewarding, especially Banjo Jen. Our ears pricked at a very lateral keyboard solo from the Cordovas closing the Southern Sounds stage Saturday.. When we pointed out that the lead singer appeared to really fancy himself Rachael's friend asked for my long lens to get a better look and then said If I was that good looking I'd fancy myself. Sunday a very pleasant conversation with Alan Mutimer and we suggested that Hachfest might return in its original form Hacheston Music Day ... who knows? |
tu 3 Jul 2018 | This weekend it's the eleventh Maverick Festival at Easton Farm Park and they've all been wonderful and miraculously virtually no rain which looks assured again. Promoter Paul Spencer is speaking highly of the Cordovas who close the outdoor Southern Sounds stage Saturday. What really impresses us is rocker Terra Lightfoot with her band will be playing at the after party in the Easton White Horse ... just a hundred tickets and a good chunk already gone ... ♫ |
su 26 Nov 2017 | ♫ Judging by YouTube Canadian Terra Lightfoot doesn't mess about and a bit of rocker, what's more last night Ella spoke highly of her, we're guessing Ella saw Terra at this summer's Maverick ... we failed there. You can see Terra and band (just one of two UK dates) plus blueser Tom Attah Friday in Easton at Maverick's Thanksgiving Party. |
su 2 Jul 2017 | ♫ Like we said as always bands we're yet to know we liked at the tenth Maverick Festival in Easton. Friday night we rocked out to the rocking Orphan Colours (awkward name) benefitting from the power saw tenor sax of Nik Carter. Saturday on the undocumented Travelling Medicine Show stage we were charmed by SJ Mortimer and just one Flying Pig (they gave us a cd ... appreciated) and charmed on the Barn stage by the Worry Dolls (excellent name) ... plus the Henry Brothers replaced our lost They Were Young And Cheery Though Neither One Could Swim badge (also appreciated). |
fr 30 Jun 2017 | ♫ This weekend is the tenth Maverick Festival at Easton and this will be our eighth. We know tonight we will enjoy Police Dog Hogan and tomorrow The Henry Brothers plus Albert (not Alvin or Arthur) Lee but the joy is there will be bands and players we don't know we like yet ... looking forward to it. |
su 5 Jul 2015 | A red tutu for the Dunwich Dynamo at the Gentleman Plumber's pop-up café near Framlingham, more Dun Run pix later but now a flat footing class with Stompin' Dave Allen at Maverick ... |
sa 4 Jul 2015 | Last night at the Maverick festival in Easton Sonia Leigh was her rock'n roll self and said she'd sing Bar for us this afternoon; in the Moonshine Bar the gentle voice of Joel Rafael was matched by the steel guitar of Brit CJ Hillman and we're planning to attend Stompin' Dave Allen's flatfooting workshop tomorrow morning. ♫ |
su 23 Apr 2017 | ♫ Last night Canadian Lynne Hanson and her band hit the spot at the Eye Bank and we were sonically tickled by the melodic bass licks of Mari Joseé Dandeneau. In 2014 we photographed Lynne on crutches at Easton Farm Park and it has taken three operations and until this year for her to be right again ... pleased to hear it. |
fr 10 Apr 2015 | ♫ Mark Olson played the first Maverick Festival in Easton, if memory serves he played Saturday night in the barn. Maverick present him again tonight at the Halesworth Cut. |
su 14 Dec 2014 | Crown and Anchor Alley Framlingham has picked up it's first Flickr fave and we uploaded Canadian musician Lynne Hanson at Maverick in Easton to Wikipedia but they deleted it ... #dontmakeiteasy eh? ♫ |
sa 22 Nov 2014 | ♫ It was so packed at last night's Maverick concert in Easton Farm Park that some were watching the show on cctv in the bar. Being appreciated were local band The Kevin Duffy Band, British banjo annoyer Dan Walsh and the sweetly soprano Canadian voice of red haired Meaghan Blanchard. Next Maverick show is February at the farm park and promoter Paul Spencer must have dug into his mad money because bill topping is Diana Jones. |
sa 11 Oct 2014 | ♫ Depping for Brigitte Demeyer at Easton Farm Park last night Canadian Lynne Hanson arrived on crutches and her whole left leg in a hinged splint. 'Are you fed up of telling people how you hurt your leg?' 'No' 'How did you hurt your leg?' 'Playing touch football, I twisted awkwardly' 'US or Canadian rules?' 'Errrr' 'Three downs or four?' 'Three' 'So Canadian rules then.' Would be very nice to have her back at next year's Maverick. ♫ |
mo 7 Jul 2014 | ♫ It had to happen in time but the rain at the Maverick Festival this weekend in the Easton Farm Park didn't seem to spoil anything much. A sultry Friday night was quite magic with multiple vans selling interesting foods, loads of bar staff on a bar that stayed open till end of play and Police Dog Hogan have just got bigger and better plus closing by Rev Peyton's Big Damn Band who were positively nuclear ... Breezy Mrs Peyton is an entertainment in herself. On a moist Sunday our Maverick was pleasantly ended by the dry Geordie wit of Graham Shipcote. |
tu 1 Jul 2014 | ♫ Guaranteed lovely weather this coming weekend, always is for the Maverick Festival at Easton farm park. Looking forward to rocking out with the Reverend Peyton (though he does clash with the Goat Roper Rodeo Band), having our hearts broken by Mary Gauthier, hopefully touching Holly Williams ... |
sa 7 Jun 2014 | TONIGHT! The Fat Band (prepping for a gig in Jerusalem?!) and the Broadside Boys at the Riverside Centre Stratford St Andrew + Maverick Festival pre-festival hog roast and hi-jinx at the Easton White Horse. The festival is 4-6 July with a lineup including Hank Williams' granddaughter Holly ... we just want to touch her. ♫ |
th 15 May 2014 | ♫ At the Maverick concert in Aldeburgh last Friday solo Morgan O'Kane had become a four piece with spoons, a fluegelhorn and a suitcase kick drum (just l♥ve those suitcase drums) plus for support the bafflingly wonderful Stompin' Dave Allen. One of Maverick's delights is being introduced to performers you probably wouldn't catch a bus to see and then are a revelation. This Friday it's Madison Violet who nominally are a pretty girl duo but who knows? they may have transmogrified into a 22 piece marching band ... |
